2012-13 TEACHER BIOS
Robin Joy Allan Ms. Allan had a magical childhood, growing up in the unique environment of Gateway. Aside from performing, her favorite hours were spent watching rehearsal where many seasoned professionals were at work. She subsequently began directing at age 9, first her brother, cousins and then her local friends in reduced versions of shows that she saw on Gateway’s main stage, and this talent grew. She began teaching at 15 years old. At 16 she was writing plays, directing and teaching in Gateway's boarding camp for performing arts students from all over the country. Gateway was a very fascinating multi-faceted organization during those years. Robin found herself performing at night, teaching in the morning and rehearsing or directing in the afternoon. Sometimes the late night hours were spent in the costume loft organizing costumes or painting a set, as the Gateway seasons back then included two-week runs, four or five Gateway-produced children's theater shows and several camp productions and scene and song revues in the Barn Theater. These early experiences resonate with her every day and motivate her to keep youthful imagination alive and nurtured within the Acting School Division at Gateway, which sat dormant in her absence during the late 1980’s thru 1993. Returning from a 5 1/2 year stint as a Casting Director, casting many children in feature films and television, Robin saw an opportunity to professionally train Long Island youngsters at the Gateway, which was then offering no training programs. While running the Acting School, teaching the advanced classes, training and discovering new teachers and directing, (Little Women, Spoon River Anthology, The Lottery, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Stage Door, 2010’s Les Misérables—Student Edition, and 2011’s Student Production of The Who’s Tommy, Into the Woods) she also spent twenty years casting over a hundred and sixty productions on Gateway’s Main Stage, and, using her years in Hollywood as her meter, she heavily influenced the new breed of actor on Gateway's main stage. Her knowledge and contact with the professional talent pool and their agents became a valuable asset to Gateway's productions, especially when someone dropped out to do a Broadway show at the last minute! Currently many performers Robin went to bat for in the casting process are now appearing on Broadway and also include Tony winner and nominee, John Lloyd Young and Jennifer Westfeldt, respectively also Kendra Kassebaum, Elizabeth Stanley, Sarah Stiles, and Kiira Schmidt. In 2001, Robin took on the task of revising the look and feel of the advertising at Gateway, from designing new brochures, posters and ads, to writing creative tag lines and coming up with ideas for Playbill articles on theatre, featuring Gateway's history, focusing on many of the departments that influence and create the show, for the enjoyment and enlightenment of Gateway's audiences. She also was one of the writers of many of those articles. Robin also cast all Children's Theater productions from 1993 to 2010. She wrote the popular Fairy Tale Trio, which ran two different summers. In 2003, Robin became the Artistic Director for Gateway's Main Stage and had a large hand in many highly-acclaimed and reviewed productions including Miss Saigon, I Love a Piano, Cats, The Full Monty, Aida, Sugar, Urban Cowboy, Hairspray, Spamalot and Sweeney Todd. She also created Gateway's very popular holiday show, A Century of Christmas. In addition to all other duties she was maintaining, she was also responsible for hiring the creative staff for each Main Stage production including the director/choreographer and musical director. She was on the small panel that picked the shows for each season and put in place marketing strategies for each production when necessary. Before arriving back on Long Island in 1993, Robin was the associate and head casting director on several TV pilots, Movies of the Week and feature films. You’ll find her name on the projects Parenthood (the film and the pilot for the series), When Harry Met Sally, Lord of the Flies, Ghost, The Outsiders (TV), and Side Out, amongst many others. She worked with actors on their way to network tests for series and feature callbacks. She also had regular students she coached in Los Angeles. Ms. Allan brings her varied industry expertise to the Acting School and designs the training to be multi-faceted in order for the students to be well-versed in theater and television/film skills. Her treasured moments are spent teaching and seeing the spark of recognition and ignited potential in a receptive artist. The college entrance audition program she developed within the School division, afforded students acceptance to BFA programs at: Carnegie Mellon, Purchase, NYU, Emerson, Syracuse, Western Michigan, Depaul University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, North Carolina School of the Arts, Ithaca, Marymount Manhattan, James Madison, SUNY Fredonia, and Muhlenberg University. Her main focus at the new Performing Arts Center is to rejuvenate the Acting School to create new programs for scholarships so that all students on Long Island can be afforded an opportunity to study the performing arts at a professional institution. She will also spearhead efforts to develop additional showcase programs and workshops that can enable serious, career-driven students to be seen by industry professionals.
